It's funny the way that in the UK, all buses must have disabled access by the year 2034. The problem with this is that by the year 2034, we will have run out of fossil fuels to run the buses. That isn't the worst though. The problem is that disabled access itself is divided down the middle. Disabled access it not what it needs to be anyway - getting around in a wheel chair is next to impossible. So what's going on then? Well, half the people out there are saying, "disabled people are just the same as us and should be treated." The other half are saying, "We need to accept the problems disabled access people have so we can improve the situation." The truth is that the answer is a mix of both of these. Yes, disabled people are basically the same as us and should be treated equally. But we also need to make sure that we have the resources and access for disabilities. The recent show, Wheelchair Challenge, conducted in the UK, showed just how poor disabled access is when 3 celebrities had to travel from Edinburgh to London from within a wheelchair. Still, as long as its not happening to you, I'm sure you think its not your problem. |
